House Rules

House Rules

Games have rules. Those rules were created by one or more people who more or less designed the whole thing from scratch, playtested it, designed a little bit more and playtested it more and so on.

Some games, particularly euro games have very refined rules, almost like clockwork. They cover everything possible in the game and by doing so ensure balance. Other games do not share such luck.

I’m not one to make or accept house rules (unless they have to do with speeding up a game which drags for hours), that’s because I like to play everything like the rulebook states. Usually modern game rulebooks don’t really have any problems that can’t be solved without resorting to make up our own rules.

I even think that most house rules are created because someone doesn’t get the rules like it should and procedes to mangle the game adding it’s own amateurish touch. I have to admit though, that certain people do have a superior knowledge of rules and proceed creating rules for better enjoyment of their game. As long as everyone in a group agrees with those rules, it’s fine really.

Just be careful of the rules you’re taught when learning a game, always ask if there are any house rules added to the mix, because that can influence your gaming experience and most of the times not in a good way.
