Dice.

The eternal torment and yet one of the most needed game parts for board gamers.

Someone stands up in the crowd:

“But good sir, eurogames hardly use dice at all!”

True, but every good game has it’s daily dose of random, dice or no dice.

Dice are seen by many gamers as the downside to a game, you plan your perfect strategy and then the dice just take it away in favor of randomness. I find this statement quite abusive, if you’re planning something you must always predict the worst possible outcome. In real life things don’t always go as planned. Why shouldn’t board games reflect it?

Of course that if you plan an entire strategy on the worst outcome you’ll get nowhere but this evaluation of risk vs. reward is essential to the fun that makes up a game.

Unless, you’re playing Risk. I know it’s usual to hear Risk sucks like it’s obligatory, and it’s obvious many people like it, that’s why it’s so successful. But I think it relies too heavily on the damned cubes. I feel like I’m thinking my head off just so when I advance I get my head blown because of the battle system. Well, it’s just a personal opinion anyway.

P.S.: There’s a forum now, so… use it :p
